Ayodhya. Mastram and his wife Lakkhi Devi, who were found guilty of culpable homicide in a dispute over arranging a marriage for money, have been sentenced to nine years of imprisonment. Both have also been fined three thousand rupees each. This verdict was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge Ashok Kumar Dubey in a crowded court on Thursday.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place in the year 2017 in Rudauli police station area. Navrozpur resident Ram Bharat’s wife had passed away. Korda village resident Mastaram and his wife Lakkhi Devi used to arrange marriages for money. They sold Seema alias Rupali, a resident of Cantt police station, to Ram Bharat for Rs 20,000. Both stayed together for three-four months. After that Seema left Ram Bharat and went to Lakkhi Devi’s house. Later Rupali was sold to Basante, a resident of Godwa in Raunahi police station area.
On June 3, 2017, Lakkhi Devi called Ram Bharat to her house. When Ram Bharat asked for his 20,000 rupees back, he was beaten with sticks and tied to a tree at 11 pm. A rumour was spread that he was a thief. Someone called 100. The police reached the spot and admitted Ram Bharat to the district hospital for treatment. Where he died in the morning. On the complaint of the deceased’s brother-in-law Laxmi Prasad, a case of culpable homicide was registered against Mastram, his wife Lakkhi Devi and Basante in Rudauli police station. Nine witnesses were presented in the court from the prosecution side. On the basis of the evidence present in the file and the statements of the witnesses, the judge has sentenced Mastram and his wife to nine years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 each.
